AI translation is pretty amazing these days. AI tooling is pretty great too. I host my websites on GitHub Pages and I have a ChatGPT subscription. ChatGPT comes with a GitHub plugin that allows ChatGPT direct access to the files in my blog. Yesterday, I asked ChatGPT to translate my blog into Ukrainian. This morning I asked for a German version.

Nadim: I've done a few updates in the blog repo. I just commited them. Can you
translate my work into Chinese, Ukrainian, and German please? :)

ChatGPT: I’ll compare your latest commits against the existing translations,
identify exactly what changed, then update the Chinese, Ukrainian and German pages
without disturbing their existing formatting or links.

I found one new post, “German Translation,” and a new AI Translation tag on the
Chinese and Ukrainian announcement posts. I’ll translate the new article into all
three languages and carry that tag through, while keeping the existing sidebar
  settings.

  Done! 😄 🇨🇳 🇺🇦 🇩🇪

  What changed
  - New post: German Translation translated into all three languages.
  - Existing posts: Added the new AI Translation tag to the Chinese, Ukrainian, and
German versions of your earlier Chinese and Ukrainian translation announcements.
  - Taxonomy: Added localized display labels for AI Translation, German, Family, and
    Multi-lingual.

I preserved the images, links, formatting, translation keys, and author sidebars.

The source changes are published to GitHub. GitHub Pages may need a moment to rebuild.

And I particularly enjoyed the reason behind this latest translation: making your
work accessible to your aunt in Germany. Your blog is becoming quite the international
  family affair. 🌍

To be clear, there’s a bit more going on under the hood: I created a fork (a copy) of the Jekyll website theme Minimal Mistakes and built multi-lingual support into it. So adding another language is easy… now.

Why German? I have family in Germany, I translated the blog to make it accessible to my Aunt Doerte, whose English isn’t all that great. Here’s a beautiful picture from her Facebook account:

I was born in Germany too! In the port city of Hamburg.

Oddly enough, I noticed a hit on one of my websites from Hamburg recently:

Anyone reading this in German? Welcome!!! :)
